Oil Changes are Recommended

Part of helping keep the vehicle in the best condition possible is to make sure the oil is changed when scheduled. The oil is an essential lubricant that is needed for the engine of your vehicle. The oil helps to allow metal to press against metal without any damage to parts or the vehicle. Also, the oil lubricates the pistons as they move up and down in the cylinders of the vehicle. Without the oil, the metal against metal friction will create an excessive amount of heat. This could then cause the surfaces to end up welding themselves together and the engine would seize up.   The motor oil lubricates and cools the moving parts for the engine of the vehicle. Without new clean oil, the engine will begin to wear down. This is because the metal on metal components can grind against one another. This will lead to extensive wear and tear to these parts. Not having clean oil, or having a level that is too low, can cause serious issues for your vehicle. By going to oil changes, you can help to alleviate the build up of sludge or varnish.   Motor oil will degrade over time because of temperatures, pressure, and contamination it will have. With time, dirt will start to accumulate in the oil. This can lead to the oil filter becoming clogged. The filter is designed to remove dirt from the oil. When we change the oil, we can also check the oil filter. If you are not sure how often to have the oil changed, make sure to contact us and we can advise you on the correct schedule.

Odors to notice for your vehicle

By recognizing any smells, you can help reduce the chance for a serious and costly issue for your vehicle. If you notice anything out of the norm for your vehicle, make sure to bring it in so we can inspect it. Any particular smell, especially one that smells like something burning, should not be ignored.   Burning Rubber Smell   If you notice the smell of rubber burning, it could mean a drive belt is slipping. The smell may also mean that a loose hose might be rubbing against rotating accessory drive pulleys. If this smell occurs, make sure to bring your vehicle in as soon as possible. This way you can help to prevent any further damage to other parts of your vehicle.   The Smell of Hot Oil   Noticing the smell of hot oil could mean an issue with leaking oil. The oil could be leaking onto the exhaust system of the vehicle. Besides the smell, you may notice oil on the pavement after being parked there for a length of time. There may also be smoke that comes from under the hood in the engine area. You will also find yourself having to add oil more frequently than usual. If this is ignored, it can cause damage to parts under the hood, and possibly the engine.   A Gasoline smell   Smelling gasoline when driving or right after parking is likely the sign of a fuel leak. The leak can be in any part of the fuel system. The leak can occur in the fuel injector line or also the fuel tank. Any smell of fuel can have the risk of a possible fire hazard.   A smell that is sweet   If you detect a smell that is a little sweet, your vehicle may be leaking coolant. The coolant can leak from any component related to the cooling system. If you check this at home, make sure to not open the radiator cap after your vehicle has been driven. The liquid can be hot and might cause burns if you check it before it has had the chance to cool down.   Rotten eggs smell   A rotten egg smell coming from your vehicle could mean a problem with the catalytic converter. The issue may be caused by it not converting the hydrogen sulfide in the exhaust to sulfur dioxide properly. It can also be the result of the engine running poorly and being overloaded. No matter what issue you notice, make sure to bring the vehicle in so we can inspect it for you.

The Battery is an Important Part

It is also important to know that the summer’s heat will do more damage to your vehicle’s battery than the winter actually does. The heat will react with the chemicals in the battery and it may result in a battery that looses its charge or fails completely. A battery that is starting to show signs of corrosion may need to be replaced in the near future. Dirt and debris can start to gather and form in tight spaces of the battery and may eventually start to cause issues. You should always make sure the battery is clean, especially around the terminals where the connections are.   The battery should also be holding the charge properly and efficiently. If your vehicle is slow to start or does not start at all, it is a good idea to have the battery tested. You can also have a battery that is overcharged, in which case, it will not work as well or efficiently as it should be. Sometimes an overcharged battery will act like one that is losing its charge, and wear out.   Also, make sure the terminals are clean as this will help with charging the battery. If you notice that the battery is loosing its charge or the vehicle is difficult to start, make sure to schedule an appointment. If you are planning on making a summer trip, having a properly operating electrical system is important for you and your vehicle.

Remember to Inspect the Windshield Wipers

Make sure to inspect the windshield for any damage that it might have. The windshield should be free of cracks, divots, or chips. If these line up in your field of vision, it could cause poor visibility when you drive. Fixing a chip early is beneficial because it can prevent a larger issue like a crack or break in the windshield later on. If the chip cannot be fixed, the windshield may need to be replaced.   Also remember to inspect the windshield wipers. Check them for any tears or rips they might have. Ideally, the wipers should be replaced before winter and before summer. If you ever notice an issue with the wipers between these times, it is always best to replace them. Having a clear view of your visibility is important when driving. If you notice that the wipers are not able to clean the windshield effectively, it could be a sign there is some damage to the wipers. If there are streaks or smear marks, it could mean that the blades of the wiper have been worn.   Besides the windshield wipers, also take a few moments to check the washer fluid to ensure it is topped off. This can help to ensure you will have enough fluid when it is needed. This can help to clean off the windshield if it becomes dirty. It is important to check the fluid, as well as all fluids of the vehicle, on a regular basis. By having the washer fluid when you need it, you can help to clean the windshield efficiently and effectively.
